Why design and simulation?

Nanoelectronic devices are based on structures whose material properties vary on an atomic length scale. Such structures can be created with a variety of experimental methods in a variety of different material systems. Interfaces between different materials can be atomically abrupt. These abrupt interfaces enable device designers to confine electrons quantum mechanically. Interactions/transitions between different man-made quantum mechanical states open a cornacopia of new device applications. Device simulation based on semi-classical approximations has proven to be a crucial element in the success of the semiconductor industry. The now available nanoelectronic design space has increased due to the large number of material systems and design concepts. However the standard simulation tools for electronic devices brake down since they do not incorporate quantum mechanical effects.


Objective of the Course

  • To introduce participants to emerging devices, modeling and simulation methodologies and applications in the area of Nanoelectronics.
  • To discuss design, operation and modeling of nano-scale devices.
  • A discrete view of spintronic and optoelectronic devices for the post-CMOS era.
  • Benefits and Outcomes of the Course

  • A hands-on demonstration of modeling and simulation of nanowire, multigate, spintronic devices using advanced SPICE and TCAD simulators.
  • Understand the physics of semiconductor devices, modern CMOS and VLSI process flow.
  • Guide/Mentor the participants to seek job opportunities in modeling and simulation fields.

  • Course Content:
  • Introduction to Nano-scale MOS modeling, Nanowire, Multigate (MuG), and tunneling based MOS devices
  • Optoelectronic devices, Thin film devices, Spintronic devices and non-volatile logic
  • Basic illustrations of SPICE with examples, Design and modeling using SPICE
  • Basic Illustration of TCAD with examples, TCAD Simulation of advanced nanoscale devices
  • Modeling and simulation of advanced optoelectronic devices, Spintronic device simulation using OOMMF
